Fed: Rich getting richer, new tax stats show

The rich are getting richer and the poor are falling further behind, according to figuresreleased by the Australian Taxation Office.

The latest taxation statistics also show Australia's wealth is increasingly being concentratedin Sydney.

The tax office says New South Wales claimed nine of Australia's top 10 income earningregions by postcode in 1999/2000 and had none in the bottom 10.

Meanwhile, average incomes in Australia's bottom 10 postcodes barely moved from a year earlier.

The statistics show residents in Sydney suburbs sharing the postcode 2027 -- includingDarling Point, Edgecliff and Point Piper -- had an average taxable income of $109,086in 1999/2000.

The Melbourne postcode 3142 -- which covers Toorak -- claimed second place with $99,412.

The postcode with the country's lowest average taxable income per person was 5301 inSouth Australia.

People in townships including Carcuma, Geranium, Jabuk and Moorlands -- about 170kmeast of Adelaide -- saw their average taxable income slip to $19,907 in 1999/2000 from$20,412 in 1998/1999.
